Time, held in green

The anonymous metch collective.

We keep returning to the moment when a journey stops being a list of places and becomes a way of paying attention.

A different pace

Travel through Europe is part of the background of this collection. What interests us is the change in attention that comes with leaving a familiar routine. At home, a day can be divided into things to finish. Away, you sometimes notice how much happens between them. Sitting down takes longer. A meal has a shape of its own. The view from a window becomes something you actually look at. Harvest belongs to that shift. We think of it as a piece with the patience to remain interesting after its first introduction, when you have stopped asking it to explain itself immediately.

The name gives us a way to speak about time. A harvest suggests that something has been allowed to develop before it is gathered. That idea matters to the way we look at a design. An image can be striking and still have no place in the garment around it. A colour can be beautiful and still say the wrong thing beside a mark. We are interested in the moment when the parts begin to belong together. Harvest holds that question in one deep field of green. The colour does a great deal of the speaking before the artwork appears.

A figure at rest

The harvest image contains a seated figure, grapes and a vessel. We return to those ordinary elements because they offer a different kind of presence from a large declaration. The figure is occupied with a world of its own. You can look at the scene without feeling that it is demanding a reaction from you. In the context of this sweatshirt, that small world becomes a way of talking about attention, enoughness and the value of a pause. It does not need a famous name beside it. Its character comes from the relationship between a person, an object and a moment.

Placement changes the meaning of the image. The chest carries a small metch signature. The harvest artwork appears lower on the back. From the front, the first impression is green, a crew neck and a restrained introduction. Turn the piece around and there is another part of the conversation. We like a garment that gives you a reason to look twice without making the second view feel like an explanation of the first. The ribbed collar, cuffs and hem frame the colour. The scene sits within that structure, close enough to be discovered rather than announced.

Letting a piece settle

For us, working on a design means returning to these relationships with a critical eye. Does the signature leave enough room for the green? Does the image have the right kind of presence on the reverse? Can the garment be recognised without every surface asking for attention? These are the questions behind the finished arrangement. A long story cannot make an unresolved arrangement feel complete. The piece has to carry its meaning in the way it is seen and worn. We use words here to let you into our point of view, while the sweatshirt remains the place where that point of view becomes visible.

Harvest is for the part of a journey you do not hurry to leave. We associate it with sitting down fully, giving a conversation your attention and allowing a small scene to hold its own importance. The green can take on a memory of your own: a place, an afternoon, a person you had time for. That possibility is part of its character. Our names remain outside the frame so that the garment can form a direct relationship with you. The work offers a beginning. What gathers around it afterwards is what makes it yours.
